What is Sciatica?

Sciatica is an irritation of the sciatic nerve, the largest nerve in the human body. It controls the nerves of the feet, lower leg, knees, buttocks, and the lower back. Sciatica is not life threatening but can cause serious problems if not treated correctly. Problems such as a spinal disc herniation, Piriformis syndrome, Spinal stenosis and others, can all be a factor when sciatica occurs. (See Sciatica Pain).

Sciatica usually occurs in people from 30 - 50 years of age. As we age, we put more stress on our muscles and bones, causing problems within the body to occur. As a result, sciatica can inhibit your ability to do the things that you have always been able to do such as play golf, ride a bike, run, walk, bend over etc. (See Sciatica Exercises)

Sciatica usually will heal itself within 2-4 months if taken care properly by doing various types of stretching, rehabilitation, and rest. With the increasing number of cases of sciatica each year, there have been improvements on treating the pain. Doctors and experts of sciatica have successfully reduced this time by 50% or more with specific stretches, exercises and techniques to get you back on your feet and living a stronger life. (See Sciatica Treatment)

Dear Sciatica Sufferer,

As we all continue to age, our bodies start to slow down, but we want to keep on going. For most sciatica sufferers, the pain is severe. It is difficult to get an adequate amount of sleep, ride a bike, walk, or even sit in a car. Although we have found that one position that relives the pain, we cannot stay in that position for the rest of our lives. This ongoing stress on the sciatic nerve is what keeps us from doing the daily activities that we enjoy and the pain never seems to go away.

In most cases, people that suffer from sciatica has seen a doctor, chiropractor, physical therapists etc, but the pain still hasn't been cured. An MRI shows exactly what is causing the problem, but does nothing to relive the pain. Doctors will recommend stretches, exercises, physical therapists, or medication. The medication has a temporary effect, while seeing a physical therapists is taking to much of our free time.

Sciatica is one of the hardest condition to treat due to so many factors that are involved. It is essential to understand exactly what is causing the pain, by completing a self-assesment. Once we have completed a self-assessment, it is then we find the exact stretches or exercises to help reduce or eliminate the pain.

Whether our sciatica was caused by an accident or normal wear and tear due to age, it is essential that we take the correct steps in order to treat our personal sciatica experience.
